St. Lucia is the patron saint of the blind. She was a young girl, living thousands of years ago, in Italy. Her parents were wealthy, and she had a dowry, which she gave away to the poor. She was a Christian, which was not allowed at that time. St. Lucia was engaged to a man she didn't want to marry, and when he found out he reported her to the police. She was arrested and sentenced to death for her Christian beliefs, they said she was a witch. She was to be burned at the stake, but the story says God saved her from the flames, they would not burn her. She was then killed by a sword.
There are different legends of St. Lucia out there. One story states that when she was in prison, and the prison guards came to get her to carry out her death sentence, she was filled with light from the Holy Spirit. The guards could not move her, she was as heavy as a mountain. They stabbed her neck, but she still prophesied against them. At last, they gouged her eyes out, but she could still see.
